Staying healthy has become more important nowadays than ever. With the unending streams of various diseases popping up these days, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a must if you want to avoid these strange illnesses.

A simple way of doing this is by cultivating certain healthy habits that can become parts of your daily routine. There are a few things you can do everyday to ensure that your health is at optimum levels always.

Here are 4 healthy habits you can incorporate into your daily routine;

1. Eat well: One of the origins of poor health is a bad diet. A healthy gut is made in the kitchen. Forming the habit of eating good food is something that will benefit your body in the long run. Make sure to eat a fruit each day and include vegetables in your diet.

Fruits are known for having high amounts of vitamin c that helps to build your immune system to fight off diseases. Vegetables and foods high in fibre, aid digestion and promote good bowel movement. It is also important that you increase your protein intake as against your consumption of carbohydrates.

Eating healthy also makes it easier for you to maintain a good body weight. You should also try as much as possible to avoid processed foods and foods that have high sugar content. Let’s also not forget the importance of drinking lots of water daily.

Starting your day with a glass of water helps to clear your insides, particularly, your digestive tract. Medical experts recommend that you should drink at least 3 litres of water daily.

2. Exercise: It is nearly impossible to live a healthy life without keeping your body active. There is a general misconception that exercise is for people who are trying to lose weight. That is not true.

Although exercise is one of the methods of achieving weight loss, it is also something that every individual needs to do if they want to be fit and healthy.

The beauty of exercise is that you don’t really need a gym membership to do it. A simple 20-minute workout a couple of times a week can also be very effective. The purpose of exercising regularly is to keep her heart pumping well and your muscles toned.

Keeping your body active is a daily healthy habit with long-term benefits such as; boosting your energy levels, improving your mood, promoting better sleep, and so much more.

3. Sleep: While eating well and exercising may be good, having enough sleep is even better. Certain studies have shown that an average adult needs at least 7 hours of sleep to maintain a good health.

If you’re eating right and working out regularly but not sleeping well, you may find yourself swimming against the tides, health wise. This is because lack of sleep or inadequate sleep can lead to the release of a hormone called cortisol. This hormone is sometimes triggered by stress.

Cortisol causes medical conditions such as depression, rapid weight gain, irregular periods, loss of libido, and even muscle weakness. Although there are other conditions that can trigger the release of cortisol in your body,  one of the main culprits is usually a lack of healthy sleeping habit.

Reducing screen time at night and drinking herbal teas (such as chamomile, lemon balm and lavender) before going to bed, can help to improve sleep. Engaging in relaxing activities like swimming and stretching can also set you up for a good night’s sleep.

4. Unplug: Another healthy habit that you should incorporate into your daily routine is to unplug from your gadgets and mobile devices for a few hours. Recent studies have shown that a high number of the world population is experiencing dopamine addiction which is caused by constant engagement with social media apps.

These apps have been shown to be designed to keep users hooked on them for hours. The feeling users get from interacting constantly with these apps can be likened to what a drug addict feels when they consume illicit substances.

While dopamine and social media apps are not inherently bad on their own, having them constantly dominating your life will eventually have adverse effects on your health. Therefore, it is advisable for you to get off those apps for a few hours daily.

Doing this will help invest your time in quality activities that can improve your life. Instead of scrolling endlessly on your phone, read a book, take a walk outdoors or even engage in a bit of gardening.

Taking time off your devices is also a great way for you to practice mindfulness. You get to be more aware of your surroundings as well as giving you the opportunity to be fully present in important moments of your life.
